Are you thinking of keeping guinea pigs as pets? These adorable little animals are so full of personality, are a delight to care for and bring such joy to a house. They may be little, but they need proper care to be contented and healthy. Providing them with the best things in their home environment is what matters, both for their well-being and your enjoyment as their caregiver. From shelter to food to baths, each element factors into giving your guinea pigs the best life.

Cage

A cage is one of the first and most important items of equipment that every owner of guinea pigs will need. Although small, they do require a surprisingly large amount of space. A tight enclosure can leave them miserable and even impact their health.

With all that said, the bigger piggy cages make for a better choice. A single guinea pig should have at least a few square feet of space, but if you’re keeping two or more, which is recommended since guinea pigs are very social, then you’ll need a much larger cage to accommodate them comfortably. When it comes to types, you’ll find both indoor and outdoor cages available.

Indoor piggy cages are best for individuals who like to have their guinea pigs close at hand, since they are usually made with plastic bottoms and wire tops that can be cleaned more easily. Much like dogs’ outdoor house designs, outdoor hutches are typically made of wood with wire mesh sides. They can give guinea pigs a nice view plus lots of fresh air, but require extra special attention in terms of safety and temperature regulation.

If you’re placing a hutch outdoors, make sure it’s weatherproof and well protected from predators. Some owners like modular guinea pigs cages made out of grids and a plastic base, which can be extended as your needs require. These are perfect if you like to customise the layout of your pets’ living area and provide them with ample space to roam about.

Most guinea pig enthusiasts realise that exercising them in their cage is as important as taking them out for play. Cleaning the cage is also important. Guinea pigs can produce quite a bit of waste, so it is best to spot clean every day and do a full clean every week to keep odours at bay and ensure they stay healthy. Change bedding, wash down the bottom and clean out water bottles and bowls to avoid bacteria build-up. A clean cage not only helps your animals but is also a nice thing for your house.

Bedding

Bedding covers the cage floor and is a big contributor to your guinea pigs’ comfort level. It has to be soft on their feet, absorbent to control moisture and non-toxic in case of accidental chewing. Paper-based products, fleece liners and aspen shavings are popular choices. Avoid using cedar or pine shavings as they can cause respiratory issues. Replacing bedding frequently keeps odours in check and your guinea pigs healthy.

Food Bowl

A strong food bowl is also essential. Owing to the fact that guinea pigs are such hungry eaters, the most suitable option would be a heavy ceramic bowl because it will not flip over when they get all worked up during feeding times. Make sure it is easy to clean and stock with fresh pellets, with a daily ration of vegetables and hay. The proper food bowl is what maintains tidiness and helps avoid food spills.

Water Bow

Although some guinea pig owners use water bottles, bowls are a great option, especially for younger or smaller guinea pigs that struggle with bottle spouts. If you choose to use a bowl, make sure it is shallow enough for them to reach but heavy enough not to knock over. Whatever you choose, water must always be fresh and clean, as good hydration is essential to their overall health.

Chew Toys

Guinea pigs’ teeth grow continuously, making chew toys a necessity to maintain them at the right length. Wooden blocks, willow twigs, hay cubes and even cardboard tubes are all ideal to keep them engaged and prevent dental problems. Chewing is an instinctual habit that keeps them busy, spares them from boredom and prevents their overgrowth of teeth.

Nail Trimmers

Just like with all other pets, guinea pigs’ nails need to be trimmed. If left too long, they will cause your guinea pig discomfort and even affect the way they walk. Small animal nail clippers are inexpensive and easy to use after a bit of practice. If you feel nervous about doing it yourself, the local veterinarian can show you how or do it until you get good at it yourself. Cutting their nails is just all part of ensuring your pets are healthy and comfortable.

To Sum Up

Guinea pigs themselves might be small, but their maintenance is full of conditions. From providing them with a big cage and cosy bedding to ensuring they eat fresh food, drink clean water and have things to bite on, everything counts towards their well-being. Adding nail trimmers to your kit also helps keep up with grooming and prevents discomfort. By preparing properly and keeping their needs in mind, you’ll create a safe, happy environment where your guinea pigs can thrive.
