Having good lighting in your house is very important. Many homeowners overlook this element and don’t give much thought to what type of lighting they choose. However, lighting can make or break the space. It can make a difference, create a nice atmosphere, and change the mood in the room. Nowadays you have plenty of options to choose from. From simple and modern pendant lighting to traditional, vintage and rustic designs.

Pendant

These lights are some of the most popular ones on the market. Homeowners love them for their interior design because they can easily blend into any room no matter its purpose. Pendants are hung from the ceiling and have only one bulb to one fixture. There are plenty of sleek and stylish hanging pendant lights to match your style and preference.

They can hang on a rope, a rod, or even a chain depending on the design. They can function as a task or an ambient light. Their primary purpose is to increase the amount of light that reaches work surfaces, dining tables, and kitchen counters. Plus, they can be a great focal point of the room and set the mood.

Pendants can be made of variety of materials. Glass is one of the options. It can be clear, opal, engraved or simple. These are very versatile pendants that can complement any room. Globe-shaped pendants are excellent for distributing light evenly, and drum-shaped ones are often made of some kind of textile.

If you want something minimalist, you can go for cord and linear hanging pendant lights. They look great above a dining table, especially in smaller rooms and houses. If you’re into more vintage elements, lanterns will fit perfectly. They add plenty of personality to the space and are a great conversation starter.

When you go to the store, you’ll see that these lights are also very affordable. They come in so many shapes, sizes, styles, and designs that you’ll easily find something to suit your needs. Plus, they’re not complicated to install.

With the proper tools and some basic knowledge, you can do it on your own. However, if you’re not sure how to do it, it’s always a better idea to call a professional and not risk hurting yourself or damaging the house. But overall, pendants are a beautiful and fun lighting option to have inside your home.

Ceiling

Ceiling lights are another great lighting option to have in the house. They can be incorporated into every room, kitchen, living room, bedroom, bathroom and hallway. They can have many shapes, come in many sizes, styles and designs. There are several sub-categories of ceiling lights. Utility lights are very simple. They’re ceiling-mounted and are often bright and strong. Homeowners often use them in the garage.

Flush lights are good for a bathroom, hallway or a closet. If your room is no more than 2.5 m tall you can incorporate them easily. Rooms with higher ceilings won’t benefit from flush lights because the light won’t fill out the space. It’ll look small and dark, which is not something you want in any room.

When it comes to size, they can vary between 30-60 diameters depending on the size of the room. They’re one of the most discrete options that’s easy to install as well. There are also semi-flush lights that hang 10-20 cm from the ceiling. They can vary in diameter and are perfect for smaller dining rooms and kitchens.

Spotlights

Just like hanging pendant lights, a spotlight can act as accent lighting. One rod can have one bulb, or 3-4 and more bulbs at the same time. The size and quantity of spotlights can change depending on the surface you wish to emphasise. You can add them close to a mirror or face them towards an art piece that you want to accentuate.

Spotlights are great for homes with minimalistic, modern vibes, and high ceilings. They’re very flexible when it comes to style and positioning and can make a statement if you position them properly. For example, if you want to make the hallway bright enough you can install them in one bunch in the centre or one by one at a certain distance along the hallway.

Your kitchen counter will be a safer working environment with them and the walk-in closet will feel big and bright with a few spotlights on the ceiling. Make sure you keep them away from swinging doors for your own safety. Measure out the space before installing them. Use them in rooms with higher ceilings, and if you’re not sure you can do it on your own call a professional.

Floor Lamps

Floor lamps can be a nice focal point of the room. They can be made of different materials and come in different styles. Besides being a great light source, they’re also a great piece of décor that will complement the overall interior of the room. They can go in a corner, beside a bed, chair or sofa as your companion during your reading sessions.

Choose the lamp’s size according to the space you have available. If the ceiling is low, don’t buy a tall lamp. Make sure the material and colour match the rest of the interior. If the room is big enough, you can incorporate three or more floor lamps. Place them carefully so they don’t overwhelm the space.

Chandeliers

The purpose of chandeliers is to make a statement and spark interesting conversations between those who visit your home. They work well in living rooms, kitchens, dining rooms, hallways, and sometimes even patios. They have more than one lamp, sometimes a couple of tiers of them.

Contemporary chandeliers are minimalist and visually appealing, while rustic ones are a representation of naturalism and are made of wood and iron. There are also farmhouse chandeliers that are nostalgic, rustic, and perfect for farmhouse interiors. Chandeliers are big and bright so don’t place them in small crowded rooms. They can overwhelm the space and make it uncomfortable to be in.
