5 Fun and Entertaining Gifts for Outdoorsy Kiddos

source: washingtonpost.com

All kids are playful by nature and want to explore new things. To encourage them further into their adventures, it’s best to let them play outside. The outdoors offers plenty of opportunities for them to develop physically and mentally. Buy them toys that they can play with outside, considering things like RC cars, trampolines, scooters, hoops, climbing domes and anything else the kids might find fun.

Ride an RC Car

This is one of those outdoor toys that kids can’t get enough of. If your child isn’t an outdoorsy kid, buy them one of the wide variety of cars RC style and watch them enjoy every second of it. These cars come in so many colour variations, design options, models and speeds. The most important part is to get the right car for the kid’s age. This will also determine the speed limit the car has.

Don’t buy a car that’s bigger than your kid can handle. This is a bad idea because it puts the kid’s life in danger. The car will be too big for them to ride and control. This can lead to accidents and of course a lot of frustration. They’ll be scared and won’t want to spend time inside it. These cars come at different price points depending on the manufacturer and the features they have.

The cars RC controlled also come in many variations. If you have two small kids and need two parallel seats, you should buy the side-by-side models. If you need only one seat, go for the ATVs. You’ll also encounter UTVs which are a combination of the previous two. Motorcycles are another option. Kids love them. To make them safe, motorcycles have extra wheels (training wheels) on each side for stability, much like bikes.

This type of vehicle’s power source is either a 6 or a 12-volt battery. You should replace them from time to time depending on the riding time that the kid has. You can do this on your own with a few tools and an instruction manual. The battery life also depends on the manufacturer and if it has some extra features that will drain it.

The features aren’t always the same. If the child is too young to operate the car on their own, there’s a remote that allows the parents to control the ride. There are RC cars that allow you to play music via an AUX port or Bluetooth. Some of them even have functioning seat belts, horns, lights, blinkers and opening doors and windows. This makes the whole riding experience much more realistic.

Kids can benefit greatly from interacting with these cars. They’ll develop and improve their motor skills, cognitive thinking and awareness. They’ll have fun and feel proud that they can control a vehicle on their own. By staying happy, they’ll get creative and start creating scenarios and stories in their head about new adventures with their favourite toy.

Jump on a Trampoline

Trampolines are something that not only the kids can enjoy. If you buy one of the bigger ones that can handle more weight too, you can have some fun as well. They’re a great pastime when the kids are bored and need to spend that extra energy they have inside of them. Adding a trampoline in your backyard means you can spend some quality time together as a family.

But before buying one, make sure you have enough space for it. Certain trampolines are large and require a large area for installation. After deciding on the location, level the location and remove any clutter or obstacles. Create a safe place for the kids and yourself. No one wants to get hurt while having fun.

There are several trampoline shapes you can choose from:

  • Round – most common, can’t fit more than three people;
  • Square – practical, can fit more than three people;
  • Oval – considered the safest because of the lack of exposed coils;
  • Octagonal – for small spaces, bigger weight capacity, great sturdiness.

Scoot on the Scooter

If you’re not a fan of the cars RC-style, then you should try scooters. They’re a great way for your kids to spend more time outside. The kid will develop their balance and motor skills, plus strengthen their muscles and bones.

Buy a scooter that’s made of durable materials, something that’s easy to disassemble and of course adjustable. A three-wheeled scooter is a safer option for children younger than five. When they become more mature and more stable, you can get them a two-wheeled one. Don’t forget to remind them how important the safety gear is. Helmet, knee and elbow pads are a must.

Shoot the Hoop

Getting your kids a basketball hoop is another approach to encourage them to spend more time outside. It’s always a good idea to get youngsters involved in sports, and this one will keep them moving at all times. Children outgrow their hoops quickly, so get them an adjustable one so you don’t have to buy a new, taller one each time they grow a few more centimeters.

Portable hoops are very practical, you can take them with you anywhere you go. Pack them up with the RC car and head to the beach, the park or even when you’re going camping. To keep the hoop sturdy, you should fill the bottom with water, sand or other heavy things. Once the kids are big enough, you can invest in a permanent hoop.

Conquer the Heights on a Climbing Dome

Have you noticed that kids love to climb over things? This is something that every kid does. Go to the park and you’ll see children clinging to the dome climbers and ladders. So, why not have one installed in your backyard? Besides being fun to play with, they’re also very beneficial for their physical and mental health.

Domes can improve the child’s strength, agility, and development of healthy muscles. They can use it as an excuse to have friends over, have friendly climbing competitions and enjoy their time outdoors. Overall, this is a budget-friendly way to keep them entertained for a long time (which is a parent’s dream come true).

When you go to the store, ask for one made of sturdy and durable materials. Something that can keep up with the weight and not bend. Look for a dome that’s easy to assemble and disassemble. This way you can take it with you on vacation or while camping. Domes come in several sizes. How big you go depends on the kids’ age and their climbing abilities.
